Community

Why.
Community comes in all shapes and sizes.  Surrounding oneself with friends and family members (through family, work, church, athletics, support groups, hobbies, political interests or other means) creates a sense of caring, of belonging.

Connecting is one of the most powerful tools to health.  Studies have confirmed that connecting with people, pets, having a support system, has an amazing effect on your health and encourages recovery from an illness.  Isolation on the other hand, can take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Taking even small steps toward building  “community” can enhance one’s quality of life.  With our rigorous work schedules, fast moving pace, it’s easy to become disconnected from people, and that often leads to loneliness and depression.  By connecting with a community of friends and family, you create social activities and that all-important feeling of belonging.

What to do.
If you already feel like you have a community, maybe you would like to enhance or deepen your connections with others.  Sharing experiences together builds bonds.  Being vulnerable, asking for help, can also deepen a connection. Helping another without expectations goes a long way to deepening a connection.

If you are looking for a community and new friends, take a step by getting involved in a project, sport, club, or group.  Make sure you do something you really love to do.  You are more likely to continue to stay involved because you love it.  Remember, it takes time to develop new friends, and be part of a community.   But the rewards create balance and good health.
